Five ex-Celts that still play

Zheng Zhi

He made 19 appearances in the Mowbray era

Unspectacular in his time here, but he wasn’t terrible either. Made his debut against Rangers in 2009 and won a penalty. Also scored the winning goal against Hearts in a 2-1 win. An excellent finish too.
Zhi is now 36 and playing for Guangzhou Evergrande where his team mates include Paulinho and Jackson Martinez! Still active in the national team too and has 92 caps to date.

Celtic record: 19 appearances 1 goal.

Shunsuke Nakamura

Almost every Nakamura goal was memorable

Undoubtedly one of the most naturally talented players to pull on the jersey. Naka was pure class. Signed from Reggina in relative obscurity yet one of the worlds best free-kick takers (and that’s really not an exaggeration).

There are 3 Nakamura moments that spring to mind straight away. A swerving thirty-five yard half-volley against Rangers that I could swear was going out for a throw at some point!
An incredible free-kick against Manchester United at Celtic Park. He already scored one at Old Trafford previously too!
Finally a last minute free-kick to win us the title at Rugby Park. What a moment that was!
Nakamura is 38 now and is back home playing for Yokohama F. Marinos where he is the club captain. He can probably still play whilst he can open cans with that left peg. A real gem of a player and a pleasure to have him at Parkhead in his prime.

Celtic Record: 165 appearances 33 goals

Liam Miller

Prime example of leaving Celtic for ‘bigger things’ gone wrong

A player with the world at his feet yet never quite made it. Excited the Celtic fans when he first broke into the team. Left for Man United and went down hill from there. After Celtic he had spells at Sunderland, Hibs, Ireland and even in Australia before moving to current club Wimington Hammerheads. They play in Americas fourth tier and at 35 is surely using the traditional retirement home to full effect.

Celtic record: 44 appearances 5 goals

Rab Douglas

Douglas was part of the Seville squad in 2003

Douglas was Celtic’s first choice keeper through the O’Neil years and will be fondly remembered as such. We signed him in 2000 to take Jonathan Gould’s jersey from him.
He was actually a good goalkeeper but he made some daft mistakes in big games!
Douglas is now 44, and is still on the books of Arbroath. He’s yet to feature this season, but even for a goalkeeper 44 is more than impressive.

Celtic record: 163 appearances

Du Wei

Du Wei’s only appearance came in a 1-0 defeat to Clyde in the Scottish Cup

Just the thought of that name makes me want to hide behind the sofa. One solitary disasterous appearance for Celtic where he was made to look stupid from an average championship side. The defeat wasn’t all his fault, but the fact he was sent packing without ever featuring again tells you all you need to know.
He came with a decent pedigree and was regarded as one of China’s best players. God help China.
It seems god has refused to do so as Du wei still features for the national team 10 years on. He’s 34 now and plays for Hebei China Fortune. Their training sessions must be a right laugh as he attempts to defend against team mates Ezequiel Lavezzi, Gael Kakuta and Gervinho.

Celtic Record: 1 appearance 0 goals.
